Academic freedom under pressure

Chairs
Tom Ginsburg tginsburg@uchicago.edu

Academic freedom is under pressure in many parts of the world. Populists exploit anti-elite and anti-scientific sentiment, while authoritarians limit the range of academic exploration to what is politically acceptable. In some countries, bullying and even physical intimidation are becoming more common. Changing models of university governance are also a source of pressure. This workshop will explore different conceptions of academic freedom around the world and will catalogue both threats as well as strategies for preserving space for teaching, research and inquiry in challenging times.
